If you want to be the best, you need to learn from the best! Here are my Top 5 Interior Design books;
CURATE - lynda gardner & ali hearth
When a books comes out that has to do with the vintage selection process, I am all in. This book got my attention from cover design and throughout with the beautiful photography.
The Australian author Lynda not only shares how to curate furniture and decor pieces, but also the art of styling and displaying these items in a way that will grab your guests attention.
Lynda and stylist Ali Heath, explore eight Elements that bring a space to life: palette, nature, textiles, lighting, a combination of old and new, storage, collections and art.
Through the featured projects, all of which are a variety of styles, this duo shares their process and thoughts as they create the unique and individualized spaces for their clients.
While there are some unpractical styling that I am sure if only for photoshoots, If any of these spaces were an AirBnB I would book in a heartbeat.
THIS IS HOME - natalie walton
This book is therapy! Most people tell you to add, add, add, which Natalie encourages us to do the opposite, let go. Letting go of what you think you should have verses what you do have to create your home for the person you are today, and focusing on the art of editing.
This book is mostly imagery and I would say carries a very minimalist style in most of the projects. But this is not a contemporary book by any means. This books highlights sustainability of keeping the original details and streamlining the contents —successful spaces are all about addition and subtraction, positive and negative.
Other topics she discusses are;
How to think outside the box when it comes to making changes at home that don't break the bank.
What to consider when designing your home in relation to its environment—and complementing the landscape and community.
Keeping focused on the home being a place of rest and serenity in this crazy world we live in that restores our souls.
FEELS LIKE HOME - lauren liess
In Lauren Liess’s third book, she asks the question of what makes you happy, and what makes you feel like home.....fancy that?!
There is an emotional connection between the way we decorate our homes and how we live. As you read through and take in the spaces that Lauren has designed you can tell that each space is connected to a person, not a style. In this book she encourages her audience to think beyond just the objects and discover how the design informs an intentional, satisfying and authentic life.
This book is practical, informative, and explores a variety of styles that will be pleasing to many different tastes, and allow for an appreciation of each project.
My personal favourite project was in Chapter 5. The mixing of rustic furniture, natural stone, and that display cabinet is something of my dreams!
I am also a fan of Lauren's book, Habitat which is a guide to home decorating and curating.
MADE FOR LIVING - amber lewis
Amber Lewis is one cool chick. I had the pleasure of hearing her on a podcast, and her relaxed approach to life and going with the flow comes out in her California Cool design style. If there is one thing I love it is that her design doesn't feel stuffy or pretentious all while feeling luxurious.
She shares practical advice from here to go paint colours, and how to update your home without breaking the bank.
This books is perfect for you coffee table as it is not only attractive on the outside, but the photography of her projects, and the details she captures will be a conversation started during your next your family gathering.
I have taken many notes and stole a few good ideas from the "How to Vintage" section. That's my vibe!

For those of us who are experience in the design industry but still need a quick reference for general rules of design standards and basics. This books teaches us rules of thumb--like what the golden ratio and the golden spiral are, the proper size for a coffee table in relation to your sofa, the optimal height to hang lighting fixtures, etc.
Follow along as Frida guides you through the different affects of lighting, to spacial planning and colour selection.
My particular favourite section is understanding traffic flow throughout the home, and how that pertains to work, family, and guest settings.
